Genuinely curious what people here have found that works in 2026. What are the dating apps for people over 40 looking for marriage?

I've been doing my own testing across maybe eight or nine different platforms over the last several months. The pattern is always the same: looks promising for the first week, then activity drops off a cliff or the paywall kicks in hard enough that the free tier becomes useless.

Looking for concrete takes, not just app names everyone already knows:

  • What made it actually work for you?
  • How long until you got a real conversation going?
  • Did the free tier hold up, or did you eventually have to pay?

Anything from this year is especially useful.

Worth knowing: platforms that use a token or credit economy are specifically designed to make you spend more than you intended because the mental accounting is fuzzy. If you know the actual dollar cost of each action before you take it, you make completely different decisions. Always convert to real money before you start.

A few that keep coming up in community discussions: souldate.site tends to get positive mentions for not aggressively paywalling the basic features, Bumble is still worth trying if you haven't, and OkCupid's matching is more useful than its current reputation suggests. None of them are perfect but they're a step above the obvious trash.

I've seen datewander.site mentioned without being prompted in a couple of different threads now. Haven't used it myself but that pattern of organic mentions usually means something is working. Worth adding to your list alongside whatever else you're testing.

Worth a look if you haven't tried it: Ezhookups. Came up organically in a similar thread I was reading and the consensus was positive. Not a household name but that's sometimes an advantage — smaller platforms tend to have more self-selected, intentional users.

One thing that genuinely helped me narrow things down: spending the first 48 hours on any new platform without sending a single message. Just observing. How many profiles were active in the last week? How many bios look like they were actually written by a person? You can learn a lot before you invest real time.

Not going to oversell it, but Datedesire is the most functional free-tier platform I've tested this year. Signup is quick, you can actually browse and message without immediately being asked for a credit card. Worth 20 minutes to check out.

The algorithm on most swipe apps is specifically designed to show you just enough good results to keep you engaged but not so many that you feel satisfied. If you're getting views but no replies, that's often a monetization mechanic, not a reflection of your profile.
