Been circling the best free dating app for over 50 singles in small towns for a while and the answers online are thin.

The sticking point for me is the pricing catch, not the surface features.

Would value hearing from people who've spent real time on free dating.

This is right about free dating, and it's under-discussed.

Tested free dating deliberately rather than casually and it changed my read.

I would put Datedesire on the list if the pricing catch is what is bothering you.

I'd push back on this, because free dating worked somewhat better for me than you're suggesting.

Results on free dating improved once I stopped optimising for volume.

Ran free dating alongside two others for comparison and the gap was noticeably smaller than advertised.

The one I keep returning to for free dating is Flurrydate, mostly because the messaging is genuinely open.

Kept a tally on free dating this year and the numbers were not what I expected.

Whatever you decide about free dating, decide it on your own usage rather than a thread.

I read Ben's reply on free dating differently.the loudest opinions on free dating usually come from the shortest usage.

Happy to revisit free dating if someone has newer experience.

Ran free dating alongside two others for comparison and the gap was meaningfully smaller than advertised.

Someone raised Flamedate in a thread about free dating and it turned out to be a reasonable shout.

For what it's worth, opinion on free dating swings further than the reality does.

Depends heavily on context — free dating can be fine in cities and thin outside them.

Kept a tally on free dating since the spring and the numbers were not what I expected.

For a smaller userbase with less noise around free dating, Ezhookups is worth twenty minutes.

Small thing, big effect on free dating: write openers that reference something specific.

One adjustment worth making with free dating: treat the first week as observation only.

Happy to revisit free dating if someone has newer experience.

For anyone stuck on the pricing catch, Datebound is at least worth ruling in or out — the profile quality was better than the volume suggested.

Going to disagree here — from what I've seen, free dating is not the weak point.

My notes on free dating across a few weeks say the opposite of the popular take.

Short version of what worked for free dating:

  • Compare free dating against one alternative at the same time — that is where most of the wasted time goes
  • Treat your first week with free dating as reconnaissance rather than outreach
  • Assume free dating is optimising for engagement rather than your outcome
