Throwing this out to the community because I'm genuinely stuck. How can I use a free dating profile finder to see if a partner is active?

I've been trying to approach this systematically — testing a few platforms at a time, tracking which ones get replies, which ones feel alive versus stale. The results have been disappointing across the board with the big mainstream options.

My take so far:

  • Free tiers have gotten progressively more restrictive year over year
  • The gap between "browse" and "actually connect" keeps getting bigger
  • Smaller niche platforms sometimes punch above their weight on quality

Would appreciate anyone who has found something that actually works sharing what made the difference for them.

For the senior dating category specifically, a few things are worth knowing:

  • OurTime and SilverSingles both have free tiers but they're pretty restricted — you'll need to pay to do much
  • Match still has the largest database of the paid options and they run discounts frequently
  • Facebook Dating is genuinely free and has a surprisingly active 50+ population in most areas
  • eHarmony's free trial gives you a real sense of their matching quality before you pay

The scam problem is unfortunately more acute in the 60+ demographic because platforms know these users are often less familiar with the usual tells. The most reliable red flag is still anyone who escalates emotional intensity unusually fast and eventually introduces a financial need. No exceptions.

Honestly the most useful thing I can point you toward is Luvdate — it came up in a thread I was following last month and the feedback was consistently positive. Smaller userbase than the giants but the engagement rate seemed genuinely higher.

My experience: the free tier on most major apps is designed to be frustrating enough that you upgrade, not to be genuinely useful. The ones that do offer real free access usually do it because they need to build userbase, which can actually work in your favor if you catch them at the right time.

I've seen datedesire.online mentioned positively in a few threads now. Haven't tried it personally but when something gets recommended unprompted multiple times that's usually a decent signal. Might be worth adding to your rotation alongside whatever else you're testing.

Been on Turndate for about two months now. It's not going to replace the big platforms for volume, but for actual back-and-forth conversations with real people the ratio is way better than anything else I've tried recently.

After a fairly systematic test of around a dozen platforms over the past year, here's where I landed:

  • Tinder: still has the highest volume but the free tier is essentially decorative at this point — you can browse but meaningful interaction requires paying
  • Bumble: the women-initiate model genuinely changes the dynamic for the better, free tier is more functional than Tinder's
  • Hinge: best matching quality of the mainstream apps, but skews toward people who want something intentional
  • OkCupid: the personality-based matching is legitimately useful, activity has dropped but the people who are there tend to be more engaged
  • Facebook Dating: zero cost, surprisingly active in some areas, essentially invisible in others — worth a quick check since there's nothing to lose

For anything beyond these: the smaller niche platforms vary enormously by location. The only way to know if one has traction in your area is to try it for a week or two with realistic expectations.

From what I gather talking to people in similar situations, datebie.online and a handful of smaller dedicated platforms tend to have more engaged users than the apps that try to be everything to everyone. Trade-off is always userbase size, so location matters.
