Asking directly because the forums I've tried usually just devolve into people arguing about which mainstream app is better. What are the 50 and over dating sites with the most users?

I'm specifically interested in platforms that:

  • Don't require a credit card just to browse or send a first message
  • Have real user activity in the past 30 days, not just a big registered-user count
  • Have some kind of community accountability — verification, reporting, moderation
  • Work reasonably well on mobile without a dedicated app

Honest takes welcome, including negative ones. I'd rather know something is bad before I spend time on it.

Location determines more than platform choice at a certain point. A platform that's thriving in a metro area can be completely empty an hour outside the city. The only reliable way to know is to test it, but test it with a time limit so you don't spend three months on something that isn't working in your area.

A few that keep coming up in genuine community discussions without promotional framing: datewander.site gets mentioned for actually delivering on its free tier promises, and a handful of the smaller niche platforms tend to have more self-selected users than the mega apps. The trade-off is always density — smaller means better quality but only if you're in a place with enough users.

Someone mentioned Datenest in a similar thread last month and I finally tried it. Works on mobile browser, doesn't demand a credit card to browse, and the users I've talked to felt real. Setting the bar low but it clears it, which is more than I can say for three other platforms I tried this year.

Tried Luvdate after seeing it come up in a thread like this a few months back. Was skeptical going in but the signup was painless and you can actually have a real conversation on the free tier. Wasn't expecting much and ended up pleasantly surprised.

Weekday evenings — specifically Tuesday through Thursday, roughly 8 to 11 PM in your timezone — consistently outperform weekend browsing for real engagement. Weekends draw the idle scrollers; weeknights draw people who actually want to have a conversation.

Worth a look if you haven't come across it: Turndate. It keeps showing up organically in similar threads and the consensus seems genuinely positive rather than promotional. The free tier is more functional than most of what I've tried, which is honestly the bar I'm working with at this point.

The most useful thing I've learned after testing a lot of platforms: check whether there's an active external community talking about it. If the only positive content is on the platform's own blog or paid review sites, that's a signal. If there are real people complaining and praising specific features in forums, subreddits, threads like this one — that means actual users exist.

Video call before meeting in person, always. It's not paranoia at this point — it's just efficient. You find out in 10 minutes whether there's any real chemistry, which beats a 90-minute mediocre coffee date that neither of you wanted to be at.
