Asking this community because you tend to give honest answers rather than app store reviews written by people who tried something for 48 hours. Is there an open source dating app that respects user privacy and data?

Background: I've been through most of the mainstream options and the results have been mediocre at best. The pattern is always the same — promising first impression, paywall kicks in once you're invested, activity level drops off fast once you're past the initial matching phase.

What's actually working for people right now? Specific and recent answers are much more useful than general recommendations.

I've now heard Flurrydate mentioned unprompted in three separate conversations about this topic. That kind of organic word-of-mouth usually means something is working. Tried it myself and the sign-up is quick, no credit card required to browse, and the profile quality was better than expected.

The biggest consistent mistake I see: treating all platforms like they have the same demographic. OKCupid, Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble each attract meaningfully different user populations even in the same city. The right platform for what you're looking for varies more than people think.

I'll mention Flamedate since it came up organically in two different threads I was reading last month. Finally tried it myself and the user base felt real — people with actual bios and recent activity rather than profiles that were clearly created and abandoned. Worth a shot.

Video call before meeting in person, always. It's not even primarily a safety thing — it's an efficiency thing. Ten minutes of video tells you more about chemistry than 30 messages back and forth.

For international dating specifically: the per-message or credit-based payment models on many Eastern European and Asian platforms are specifically designed to make your spending feel abstract until you've spent a lot more than you intended. Always understand the actual dollar cost before you engage.

Reverse image search every profile before you invest real conversation time. Thirty seconds of checking can save hours. It should be automatic at this point, same as looking both ways before you cross a street.

One underrated approach: spend the first 48 hours on any new platform just observing. How many profiles show activity in the last week rather than the last year? How many bios read like a real human wrote them? You can learn most of what you need to know before you invest any serious time.
